The first 6 weeks after a Resident enters the Home on a long-term basis, will be mutually agreed as being a recognised trial period. At the end of the trial period, the ability of the Home to meet the needs of the Resident will be fully considered by the Resident and the staff. Residents must be encouraged to bring personal possessions, including furniture (space permitting), with them into the Home.
Domestic routines must meet the needs and preferences of the Residents and not reflect administrative convenience. Rules relating to residents must be kept at a minimum, and independence will be encouraged, recognising that this may involve a degree of responsible risk-taking.
Residents are encouraged to continue active involvement with relatives.
Residents must be involved, as much as possible, in decisions concerning the way that the Home is run.
Residents must be addressed in the manner in which they choose. All complaints will be treated seriously, and recorded. Residents must be made aware that they have the right to refer all unresolved complaints to the Care Quality Commission. The right to privacy in the Residents' own room must be recognised.
Residents have the right to meet with whom they choose in private, in their own rooms, or other suitable accommodation. A Resident has the right to refuse to see a visitor.
Residents who are deemed able to do so, must be given the option of retaining and administering their own medications, and be provided with a secure place in which to keep them.
It is necessary to recognise that each Resident is a person who indi¬vidually should be supported by staff. This places an obligation on staff to encourage the exercising of choice by Residents, and assists with the right to independence that Residents must experience. All Residents must have parity of esteem, and be valued as people having their qualities and talents acknowledged. Each Residents right to privacy and dignity must be maintained.
